Peter Nicholas Kuss papers, 1877-1913.

The collection consists of correspondence, financial records, contracts and other documents relating to the financial, legal and professional activity of Peter Nicholas Kuss. The bulk of of the papers (in Box 1) relate to legal matters (including title and logging claims) of the Kaweah Co-operative Colony and its offshoot, the Esperanza Land and Improvement Company. Material includes documents by or relating to several of Kuss's fellow founding members of both the Kaweah Colony and the Esperanza Colony (Charles F. Keller, J. G. Wright, and Francis X. Fischer). One folder of photographs and other material (in Box 1) documents the loss of Peter Kuss's painting and decorating business as a result of the San Francisco earthquake and fire in 1906. Five folders of material (in Box 2) consist of financial and legal records of Francis X. Fischer, whose finances were managed by Kuss. One oversize box (Box 3) contains financial ledgers and certificates.

Peter Nicholas Kuss (1849-after 1900), was a founding member of the Kaweah Co-operative Colony and of the Esperanza Land and Improvement Company, and owner of a painting and decorating business in San Francisco. Kaweah Co-operative Colony, founded in 1885, was a utopian socialist community in Tulare County, California.
